SHORT STORY OF THE HOUSE
The Captain’s House of Domus K 1885 in Oia is deeply rooted in the life of Kadio Sigalas, one of Santorini’s most remarkable women.
Born into a maritime family, Kadio grew up surrounded by the island’s seafaring and wine-trading traditions. She later married Captain Georgios Sigalas and became a pioneering figure in Greek shipping, expanding the family fleet and navigating a male-dominated industry with strength and determination.
Following the devastating 1956 earthquake, the upper level of the Captain’s House was destroyed. Kadio adapted, relocating to the lower floor - once the servants' quarters, where she continued her life with resilience and quiet strength.
Today, the house stands as a living memory of her life - a place where history, culture and spirit continue to unfold within its walls.
